We want to make our community aware of a growing scam trend involving Bitcoin ATMs. Nationally, scammers are using these machines to trick victims—especially seniors—into sending money through fake phone calls, online threats, and impostor schemes (IRS, utilities, tech support, “your family member is in trouble,” etc.).
Here in Cooper City, we have already received two reported cases connected to this type of fraud.
What is a Bitcoin ATM?
A Bitcoin ATM is a kiosk that allows people to buy or send cryptocurrency (most commonly Bitcoin) using cash or a debit card. While they may look similar to a regular ATM, they are not connected to your bank, and transactions are instant, irreversible, and extremely difficult to trace, which makes them appealing to scammers.
Important reminder:
No legitimate business, government agency, or law-enforcement officer will EVER ask you to make a payment using a Bitcoin ATM. If someone directs you to a kiosk and tells you to deposit money “to avoid arrest,” “protect your bank account,” or “help a family member,” it is a scam.
Protect yourself & your family:
• Hang up immediately if someone pressures you to use a Bitcoin ATM.
• Never send money to someone you have not met in person.
• Talk to your loved ones, especially seniors, about these scams.
• If you’re unsure, call BSO’s non-emergency line at (954) 764-4357 before acting.
We are sharing this to help keep Cooper City informed and protected. Stay alert, and please report suspicious activity.
